What is Foil Drive?

What Does Foil Drive Do?
Foil Drive is an electric foil assist system that helps riders reach the speed needed to lift onto the foil. By providing additional power during takeoff, it makes foiling more accessible and allows riders to spend more time flying above the water.
How Does Foil Drive Work?
Foil Drive consists of a compact battery, controller, and electric propulsion unit mounted to a compatible foil setup. The system provides on-demand power through a handheld wireless controller, helping riders accelerate onto the foil before reducing or stopping assistance once flying.
How Is Foil Drive Different from an eFoil?
Unlike a dedicated eFoil, Foil Drive can be fitted to most existing foil boards and foil setups. The system is significantly lighter than a traditional eFoil and is designed to provide assistance rather than continuous motor power, although continuous powered riding is possible when required. Once on foil, riders can rely on the wind, waves, swell, or their own pumping technique, creating a riding experience that feels much closer to traditional foiling.
Who Is Foil Drive For?
Foil Drive is suitable for a wide range of foiling disciplines, including surf foiling, wing foiling, downwind foiling, SUP foiling, and flat-water foiling. Whether you are learning your first flights or looking to extend your sessions and explore new possibilities, Foil Drive can help riders progress faster and access conditions that may otherwise be difficult to foil.
Who Should Use a Foil Drive?

Riders Learning to Foil
Foil Drive can make the learning process easier by helping riders reach take-off speed and spend more time flying on the foil. More successful starts often mean faster progression and greater confidence on the water.
Surf Foilers
For surf foilers, Foil Drive unlocks a whole new playground beyond the shoreline. Riders can reach offshore swell lines, connect rolling open-ocean waves, and explore conditions that are often difficult or impossible to access through traditional paddle-in foiling alone.
Downwind Foilers
Foil Drive has become a popular tool for downwind foiling, helping riders get onto the foil and connect swells more efficiently. This makes downwind riding more accessible and allows riders to spend more time gliding with the energy of the ocean.
Experienced Foilers Looking for More Possibilities
Unlike a dedicated eFoil, Foil Drive can be fitted to many existing foil boards and foil setups. This allows riders to add electric assistance while continuing to use the equipment they already know and enjoy.

Learning Downwind Foiling in Andalucía
The Strait of Gibraltar is one of Europe’s most exciting destinations for downwind foiling. During Levante wind conditions, the run from Tarifa to Valdevaqueros provides the ideal environment to learn and develop your downwind skills. With consistent wind, ocean swell, and manageable distances, it is the perfect place to experience the unique feeling of connecting swell after swell.
Foil Drive is an excellent tool for learning downwind foiling. It helps riders get onto the foil more easily, connect swells with confidence, and extend each session, allowing faster progression in a safe and controlled way.
For experienced downwind foilers, the Getares to Tarifa route is considered one of Europe’s ultimate downwind adventures. Combining strong Levante winds, powerful currents, and long ocean swells, this demanding crossing offers an unforgettable riding experience for advanced riders.
Downwind foiling in the Strait of Gibraltar should never be undertaken alone. Strong winds, currents, shipping traffic, and changing conditions make it essential to ride with experienced partners, use appropriate safety equipment, and carefully assess the conditions before every run.

Foil Drive Setup & Tuning
The right setup can make a significant difference to your Foil Drive experience. Factors such as battery placement, mast position, propeller choice, board selection, and cable length all influence performance, efficiency, and ease of use. The tips below will help you get the most from your Foil Drive system.
Battery placement
Apply a small amount of battery grease around the connector before installing the battery. Always insert and remove the battery in a straight line and avoid forcing it into position. Keep the battery compartment, battery, and your hands as dry as possible, especially when changing batteries between sessions.
Mast placement
The ideal mast position depends on your board, foil, riding style, and personal preference. If your setup doesn’t feel balanced, use this simple rule: move the mast backwards to reduce front foot pressure and improve control, or move it forwards to reduce back foot pressure and increase lift. Once you’ve found the ideal position, mark it on the foil tracks, especially if you use different foils.
Propeller options
Foil Drive offers three propeller options:
Black (Standard): The best all-round choice, balancing thrust, efficiency, and speed.
Green (Low-Speed): Provides maximum low-speed thrust for easier take-offs, heavier riders, smaller front wings, and improved recovery after stalling..
Grey (Mid-High Speed): More mid-range power and higher top speed for performance-oriented riders and faster conditions.
Board selection
Foil Drive can be used with most foil boards fitted with foil tracks. The ideal board size depends on your experience, body weight, riding goals, and local conditions.
Beginners generally benefit from higher-volume boards, while experienced foilers can ride smaller boards. Dedicated Foil Drive boards like f.e. trench boards are also available, offering reduced drag and optimised performance.
Full carbon boards with carbon foil tracks may reduce the Bluetooth signal between the Foil Drive unit and the controller. If this occurs, an external antenna provides a simple and effective solution.
Cable length
Cable length has a significant impact on how your Foil Drive performs. In general, longer cables are more forgiving and beginner-friendly, while shorter cables offer better performance for experienced riders.
Beginners often benefit from longer cables, which provide a more stable and predictable ride. As skills improve, many riders move to shorter cables, allowing the motor to leave the water sooner and making it easier to use the energy of waves and swell.
70+60 cm. Ideal for foil unexperienced and Efoiling.
30 cm: Ideal for beginners and easy cruising.
25 cm: A versatile option, balancing progression and wave performance.
20 cm: Best suited to advanced riders seeking maximum performance.
15 cm: Designed for experienced riders in clean conditions.
12 cm. Designed for experienced rider only
The ideal cable length depends on your experience, riding goals, board setup, and local conditions. If in doubt, seek advice before choosing your setup.

Foil Drive Maintenance & Service
Battery care
Store the battery in a cool, dry place and avoid exposing it to excessive heat. Regularly inspect the connectors for dirt or damage, and always follow Foil Drive’s charging and storage recommendations to maximise battery life.
Avoid fully discharging the battery to 0% and disconnect it from the system after each session. Fusion batteries can be disconnected using the Foil Drive app.
Cleaning after saltwater sessions
Rinse the closed Foil Drive system thoroughly with fresh water after every saltwater session, paying particular attention to the propeller hub, motor, connectors, and battery compartment.
Allow all components to dry before storage, then apply a marine-grade anti-corrosion spray around the motor and propeller hub to help protect the system from saltwater corrosion.
Firmware updates
Foil Drive regularly releases firmware updates that may improve performance, reliability, and functionality. Check for updates through the Foil Drive app and keep your system up to date.
Annual inspection
Inspect your Foil Drive system at least once a year for signs of wear, corrosion, or damage. Check all cables, connectors, seals, and mounting hardware to ensure everything remains in good condition.
Spare parts availability
Foil Drive offers a range of replacement parts and accessories, including propellers, cables, batteries, and hardware. As the official Foil Drive distributor in Andalucía, Adrenalin Kite Area can assist with spare parts, service, and support.
